Danube cycle path LK Kelheim

Length: 63 km

Culturally and scenically varied cycle tour along the longest river in Europe

The beautiful cycle path takes you along separate cycle paths or roads with little traffic, making the Danube Cycle Path ideal for families with children. Due to the mostly flat route profile, combined with the good, cyclist-friendly infrastructure, the Danube Cycle Path is suitable for taster cycle tours as well as long-distance trips. We follow the Danube cycle path from Neustadt/Bad Gögging to Regensburg.

We leave Bad Gögging in the direction of Sittling, keep right at the first houses in Sittling and cycle through the fields in a north-easterly direction. We come to a spider trail and take the second path from the right, continuing in a north-easterly direction until we come to a road, the Ferienstrasse Alpen-Ostsee. We follow it to the left, but then immediately leave it to the right and pass a wooded area. Where the forest recedes a little, we turn left and continue straight on through the narrow section of forest until we reach Staubing. Here we keep to the right and follow the Danube to Weltenburg, where the oldest monastery in Bavaria, the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg, founded in 617, is located above the Danube gorge in a loop in the Danube. A detour there is definitely worthwhile. On leaving Weltenburg, we turn diagonally left into Arzberger Straße and cycle through the forest to Hohenpfahl. Here we pass a lime works, cross the Danube and a little later the Main-Danube Canal to reach Kelheim. In the beautiful Wittelsbach town, we recommend a stop for refreshments or a visit to the museum. In Kelheim, we cycle parallel to the canal, which soon flows into the Danube, to the right. After a short detour to Kelheimwinzer, we cycle along the Danube via Herrnsaal past Kapfelberg to Poikam. There we cycle along Kanalstraße, cross the railroad tracks on Dorfstraße and then turn left onto Kreuzstraße. This turns into a path that bends to the right at the tracks just before a crossroads. We follow the path to the right, over the crossroads and cross first another canal and then the Danube. If you wish, you can make a detour to Bad Abbach with its castle, Roman baths, museum and churches worth seeing. On the other side of the river, we keep left and reach Oberndorf and continue along the bank to Matting. We finally leave Matting on Wolfgangstraße and cycle a little away from the riverbank to Unterirading. Once again directly along the river, we ride past Pentling, over the A3 highway, past Prüfening and the Naab tributary to Regensburg. Shortly after the A93, which we cross, a bridge takes us to the Danube island of Stadtamhof, where our cycle tour ends. The tour ends with a visit to the city of Regensburg.
