Through the Altmühl and Schambach valleys

Length: 60 km

The idyllic Altmühltal and Schambachtal valleys are the scenic highlights of the route, which is flat throughout. Along the two signposted cycle routes

The tour starts at the Archaeological Museum in Kelheim. Follow the path in the direction of the barrage onto the Altmühltal cycle path. After Oberau, the route leads past the Schulerloch stalactite cave. Stay on the Altmühl until you reach the soccer pitch and then cross Altessing on Schellnecker Straße. At Einthal, change to the opposite side of the road and cycle directly along the Altmühl. On the right, Prunn Castle is enthroned on a huge rock high above the landscape. Continue along the course of the river and cross it on the first bridge in Riedenburg. Follow the road for 400 m, then leave the Altmühltal cycle path to join the equally well signposted Schambachtal cycle path. This runs along a former railroad line between Riedenburg and Ingolstadt, flat and close to nature. Cross the Schambach at the junction to Frauenberghausen and return to the right bank of the river in Neumühle. Cycle past Hexenagger Castle on the main road and cross the village of Hexxenagger. The idyllic Schambach valley with its gentle floodplains and lush green meadows and forests now dominates the scenery. The tour leads via Leistmühle and Hanfstinglmühle to Altmannstein and the castle ruins. Follow the Schambachtal cycle path through Sollern and Neuenhinzenhausen, crossing Landshuter Straße in the direction of Sandersdorf. After a few kilometers, the tour continues to Oberdolling, cross Friedhofsstraße here and turn right onto Tholbatherweg. Cycle through Kösching and Lenting on the perfectly passable railroad line. At the end of the town, follow Ingolstädter Straße, which becomes Beilngrieser Straße in Oberhaunstadt. Once in Ingolstadt, turn right onto Roderstraße, cross the railroad tracks and then turn left towards the historic old town. Cross the Main-Danube Canal on Donaustraße and continue straight ahead to the end of the tour, Ingolstadt's main railway station. However, if you still have some energy left, you can alternatively cycle along the canal back to Kelheim (approx. 30 km).
