This beautiful hike, most of which is on flat paths, starts on the opposite side of the Danube from Weltenburg Abbey. If you would like to end your hike here, we recommend that you make sure that the barges, which ferry you across in an unconventional way, are still in use. Alternatively, you can take the Weltenburg-Stausacker cable ferry, although you will need to keep an eye on travel times.
The hike initially leads along a road alongside the Danube directly into the small village of Stausacker. Shortly before the church, the path branches off to the right and now leads slightly uphill out of the settlement. After a few minutes' walk, the Danube loop turns left onto a field path. This ridge offers a unique view of Weltenburg. Through the forest, across a clearing and finally along a hollow path, you reach the settlement of Haderfleck after approx. two kilometers and thus the Danube valley again.
After about a further kilometer along the edge of the forest, the Limes or Jakobsweg trail branches off, where you will find Hadrian's Column and a reconstruction of a Roman watchtower just a few minutes away. Continuing along the banks of the Danube, you reach the cable ferry at Hienheim. Powered only by muscle power and the current, the nostalgic vehicle takes you safely to the other side to Eining. There is a wonderful beer garden right next to the landing stage, inviting you to take a well-earned break.
Afterwards, you have to decide whether you would prefer to hike back to Weltenburg Abbey or whether you would like to make a detour to the Abusina Roman fort in Eining. The fort is only about 15 minutes away on the Roman loop in a southerly direction.
The way back to Weltenburg always runs along the banks of the Danube. Before you reach Weltenburg Abbey again, you pass the first massive Jura rocks. They are the harbingers of the magnificent backdrop of the "Weltenburger Enge", a nature reserve that has been awarded the European Diploma.
The Benedictine Weltenburg Abbey, with its baroque church built by the Asam brothers and the oldest monastery brewery in the world, is one of the most important cultural and historical sites in the region. In the beer garden of the monastery tavern, which is located in the inner courtyard of the monastery, we recommend finishing the hike with an award-winning "Barock Dunkel".
