Weltenburg Monastery is located at the entrance to the romantic Danube Gorge. It was founded by the Iro-Scottish-Columbian wandering monks Eustasius and Agilus of Luxeuil (Burgundy) around the year 600, making it the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria.
The abbey church, built and decorated by the Asam brothers between 1716 and 1739 under the then Abbot Maurus Bächl, is one of the top achievements of European Baroque. Weltenburg fell victim to secularization in 1803 and was dissolved. However, it was re-established as a priory by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1842 and settled by monks from Metten. Weltenburg has been an abbey again since 1913.
The community sees its main task as pastoral care (looking after two parishes) and welcoming guests. The St. Georg guest house serves this purpose with accommodation for around 90 people. It is also involved in Catholic adult education with a series of seminars. Retreats and retreat days are also offered. Another pastoral task is to convey the message of the Christian faith to the numerous tourists (approx. 500,000 per year) in the guided tours of the church through architecture and art.
The monastery brewery caters for the physical well-being of tourists. The brewery is leased out. A farm also belongs to the monastery.
