East Bavarian Way of St. James Stage 7: Regensburg - Kelheim

This sporty stage on the East Bavarian Way of St. James takes you from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg to Kelheim in the Altmühltal valley.

The approx. 25-kilometre stage begins on the western edge of Regensburg's old town in Jakobsstraße. Passing St. Jakob's Church with its impressive bulkhead portal, you reach Prüfeninger Straße, which you follow for around two kilometers.

Leave the Regensburg-Prüfening train stop, where you can also start the stage, on your left and follow the path to Prüfening Abbey, a former Benedictine abbey. Cross the Danube over the Sinzing railroad bridge. Sinzing is the last opportunity to stock up on provisions for the time being before you leave the Danube valley on a steep climb.

Your route, which mainly runs through the forest, now takes you via the villages of Bergmatting, Saxberg and Schneckenbach. Approx. five kilometers before Kelheim, you will reach the Frauenhäusl restaurant. Here you can choose between the main route or an alternative route to reach the Wittelsbach town of Kelheim.

If you follow the main route, your hike will take you over the Goldberg, past the Stations of the Cross on the Calvary, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over Kelheim, the Danube and the Liberation Hall. Once you arrive in Kelheim, you can visit the organ museum in the former Franciscan monastery church or end your hike in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants.

If you opt for the alternative route, your path will take you to the Kelheim district of Kelheimwinzer, where you can visit the Church of St. James. The alternative route is approx. 3.5 kilometers longer than the main route.
