Schambachtalbahn cycle path

Length: 45 km

Cycling on the tracks of the Ingolstadt - Riedenburg local railroad

Current information

Due to construction work between Altmannstein and Leistmühle, the Schambachtalbahn cycle path will be rerouted via Berghausen until mid-August.

The detour is signposted accordingly.

Description

The Schambachtalbahn cycle path between Ingolstadt and Riedenburg connects the Danube cycle path with the Altmühltal cycle path. On its route, it ideally combines the scenic experience with an excursion into the region's railroad history.

The Bike tour on the Schambachtalbahn cycle path runs along the former railroad line between Ingolstadt-Nord and Riedenburg, which was opened in 1904 and finally closed to passenger traffic in 1972. The 45-kilometre cycle path starts at Ingolstadt main station and runs along the former railroad line of the Schambachtalbahn after crossing Ingolstadt.

The route is family-friendly: it is almost completely flat and close to nature away from road traffic. The scenic highlight of the Cycle route is the idyllic Schambach Valley, with its gentle river meadows and lush green meadows and forests. In addition to cycling, the Schambachtalbahn cycle path is also a great way to experience nature.

You will find romantic castles and fortified fortresses along the way: from the new castle in Ingolstadt's historic old town to the ruins of Altmannstein Castle and Hexenagger Castle to the three-castle town of Riedenburg.
