„Oba heit is‘ kalt - Schäfflertanz Kelheim“

Special exhibition, November 21, 2025 - April 12, 2026

„The Schäffler are dancing again!“

This joyful news is announced at regular intervals of seven years. The performance of the Schäffler dance since its origin in 1517 has always been characterized by a cheerful and hopeful mood. The dance originated at a time when the plague epidemic was ravaging many people and they no longer dared to go out on the streets. The Schäffler - the barrel makers - would unexpectedly parade through the streets with cheerful music and spread an atmosphere of confidence among the residents.

In 2026, the Kelheim Schäffler will once again perform in the town and spread joy and confidence with their traditional dances. The Kelheim Archaeological Museum is dedicating a special exhibition to this occasion. The exhibition offers the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the Schäffler dance in general and more specifically about the Kelheim Schäffler dance as an important part of the town's life. As the Schäfflers are barrel makers, visitors also gain an insight into the almost extinct craft of barrel making.
