The furnishings in the historic rock cellar show the 1000-year history of the Benedictine abbey and its monastery brewery: the legendary founding of the monks' cell on the banks of the Danube, the decline and new beginnings in the Middle Ages and in the 19th century, but also why the Benedictines live in Weltenburg today with conviction and faith. And you can discover why the purity of the water in the Weltenburg narrows is not just the secret of the tasty monastery drink.
The exhibition is housed in the historic cellar of the monastery brewery, which is carved out of natural rock. It can already be seen on an engraving from 1726. It ranges from fossils as witnesses of prehistory, when today's Weltenburger Enge was flooded by a subtropical sea, to the first traces of early Christianity and the eventful centuries of the monastery from the Middle Ages to modern times, right up to the current life and work of the Benedictines in Weltenburg. There is also a section dedicated to hop juice: from the discovery of "liquid bread" by the Sumerians (around 5000 BC) to the first "beer brewing" by the monks at the turn of the millennium and the Purity Law, according to which Weltenburg monastery beer is still brewed today.
Not only does a "miniature Danube" flow through the environmental space. There are also fauna and flora treasures to discover, from the Danube barge snail, which adorns what is probably Bavaria's oldest piece of jewelry at 5,000 years old, to the feather grass, the "chamois beard" of the Altmühltal, to the hermit, a beetle that lives as secluded as a monk in his hermitage. The three main themes of Weltenburg Benedictine Abbey, the environment and the monastery brewery are additionally illustrated by image projections and film screenings.
