The relatively flat Abensberg - Weltenburg stage is 18.5 km long. You leave Abensberg heading west and, after crossing a residential area, you reach the Abens again, which you cross over a small bridge. The route continues along the railroad line for about 1.5 km, past the newly built chapel in honor of St. Gilla and the Schillhof wasteland.
The path leaves the railroad line, past the village of Heiligenstadt to the beginning of Bad Gögging. Follow Heiligenstätter Straße until you reach the pedestrian zone, where you turn right and follow it to the Limestherme and Kurhaus or Kurkirche and the Kursee lake. Enjoy the peace and quiet in the peaceful Kurpark. You come to Heiligenstädter Str. again, where you can find out about current events at the tourist information office or obtain the Bad Gögging pilgrim's stamp. Follow the signs for the Danube Panorama Trail for about 2 km.
Follow Neustädter Str. past the old spa gardens until you cross the Abensbrücke bridge. Cross the road and follow the Abens, past the mini golf course and beer garden to the end of the village, where you turn right onto a gravel path to the Zettl family chapel. About 400m further on, you leave the Danube Panorama Trail and reach the village of Sittling with its charming little church of St. Wolfgang. Sittling is considered the birthplace of St. Eberhard.
Shortly after Sittling, the pilgrimage route meets the Danube Panorama Trail again. Please follow the signs for the Panorama Trail from here to Weltenburg Abbey.
The path now leads slightly uphill to the road, which you follow to the left on a beautiful hiking trail to Abusina Castle. From here you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Abens and Danube floodplains. A visit to the newly renovated Abusina Castle is well worthwhile. After a few minutes you reach the village of Eining. At the church of St. Sebastian, a narrow path leads down to the Abens to the beer garden at the cable ferry to Hienheim. From here, follow the Danube for a good 7 km past Staubing to the beginning of Weltenburg. It is then only about 700 m to Weltenburg Abbey, following the road to the left. You should allow plenty of time to visit the monastery, the impressive Asamkirche church and the beer garden.
Public transport You can reach the start of the Abensberg stage by train or the buses of the VLK. Timetable information is available at Bavaria timetable.
