Beer and spiritual contemplation have always gone hand in hand. The worldly and spiritual pleasures are also close together on this tour. From Kelheim, the route leads via Saal a. d. Donau on the beautiful Esperbachtal cycle path to Herrnwahlthann, the first stop. This truly idyllic village is home to a small pub brewery with a very special flair. The young master brewer attaches great importance to special beers and not only the rustic pub, but also the wonderful beer garden invite you to linger a while
in.
It is only a few kilometers from Herrnwahlthann to the market town of Langquaid. The small market has blossomed and, with its parish church of St. James, is now a real jewel among all the towns in the region. Many festivals and markets take place here. A small Orenstein & Koppel, an old train for enthusiasts, always runs on these dates. Guided tours of the market history are also worth experiencing here!
The next brewery along the way is in Herrngiersdorf, a place of pilgrimage where Blessed Bernhard Lehner is buried in the church. With the venerable name of Schlossbrauerei Herrngiersdorf, the oldest private brewery in the world is romantically situated in the Laabertal valley and today produces modern and creative beers. From Herrngiersdorf, it is around seven kilometers to Niederleierndorf, a typical Lower Bavarian village that has retained its original character. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with its miraculous image dates back to 1740. The route continues via Oberleierndorf to Hellring. The large pilgrimage to St. Ottilie takes place here every year on the second weekend in October. Now comes a long stretch through slightly hilly countryside. Via the spa town of Bad Abbach to Oberndorf. Here you will find the Berghammer brewery, which is a popular meeting place, not only for cyclists, with its mild, drinkable beers and beer garden on the Danube. Past the leisure island
Finally, the route follows the Danube cycle path via Poikam back to Kelheim.
Directions:
Start and end of the tour either in Kelheim or Saal (Danube). Travel to Saal comfortably by train from Regensburg or Ingolstadt.
