Brewery cycle tour 1: Altmühl-Danube monastery tour

The tour begins in the Wittelsbach town of Kelheim with its beautiful old town along the Altmühl and the Main-Danube Canal. The oldest wheat beer brewery in the world, the Schneider wheat beer brewery, and the Frischeisen private brewery are located here. The Altmühltal cycle path takes you through the beautiful countryside along the Main-Danube Canal to the idyllic village of Essing with the ruins of Randeck Castle, nestled in the rock formations of the Bavarian Jura, a growing area for malting barley of the highest quality. In the town center, "between rock and river", the private Schneider brewery welcomes its guests. Cycle past Prunn Castle, one of the best-preserved castles in Bavaria, to the three-castle town of Riedenburg.

The Riemhofer brewery and the Riedenburger Brauhaus have made a name for themselves as local breweries. The latter brews its beers exclusively with organic ingredients and also has "exotic" beers such as emmer and einkorn beer in its range. Here you can also embark on a culinary discovery tour with a visit to one of the many restaurants. The tour continues along the Schambachtalbahn cycle path through the idyllic countryside via Hexenagger, Tettenwang and Laimerstadt onto the Limes cycle path. Finally, a short breather awaits you in Eining: take the cable ferry to the other bank of the Danube. Plan a little time here to visit the Abusina Roman fort before setting off on the last stage to Weltenburg. After a visit to the artfully designed baroque church by the Asam brothers, you can enjoy the delicious Barock Dunkel from the oldest monastery brewery in the world in the wonderful beer garden at Weltenburg Monastery. On the way back to Kelheim, you can take a boat trip and marvel at the Danube Gorge from up close.
