Current information

Due to construction work, there will be rail replacement services at Saal (Donau) station during the following periods: 4 to 31.07. and 29.08. to 2.09.2025. The buses used do not transport bicycles. Alternatively, you can use the leisure bus on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The nearest train stations are in Regensburg (from Kelheim further along the Danube cycle path) and in Münchsmünster (on the Danube cycle path towards Ingolstadt).

Kloster Weltenburg

On the last section from Essing to Kelheim, the Schulerloch stalactite cave awaits as a highlight along the way. At 420 meters long, it is one of the largest stalactite caves in the entire Altmühltal. A short climb on foot is required to reach the entrance. Also worth a short stop are the stations of the Altmühltal Archaeology Park along the way, such as the burial mound of a Bronze Age cemetery near Altessing. The majestic Liberation Hall on Kelheim's Michelsberg soon comes into view. It was erected to commemorate the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation. The Main-Danube Canal and the Danube meet in Kelheim, the former residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Here you can continue your tour on the Danube cycle path. However, you should not miss a boat trip through the world-famous Danube Gorge to Weltenburg Abbey beforehand.
