Guided tour of the Council of Europe award-winning archaeological exhibition in the museum

Let us take you on an exciting journey through time to our ancestors - from Neanderthals to the ducal residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Learn interesting and curious facts about the life of people in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.

Marvel at their mining skills or find out what Homer has to do with Celtic tombs! Would you like to know what a perforated stick, the fertile crescent or a bread loafidol is? Let us tell you why a Bandkeramik house had no chimney and admire with us the famous "Weltenburger Stierl", the "Kelheimer Kanne" or the silver treasure of Eining. Guided tour of the city history exhibition in the museum

Cheleheim" and "Gimundi" become the "City by the River". Three big "Ws" put their stamp on it: Wittelsbacher, wine and wheat beer. Guided tour of the Celtic oppidum on the Michelsberg
Stroll with us through the huge Celtic city on the Michelsberg! Past the Liberation Hall with a magnificent view of the town of Kelheim and the Danube gorge. Learn details about one of the largest Celtic fortifications, the countless excavation pits and what a Zangentor is. Immerse yourself in the exciting history of the Celts in Bavaria over 2000 years ago - and experience the breathtaking natural landscape of the Weltenburger Enge. On the trail of the Ice Age hunters in the Altmühltal valley

The tour for children and adults takes you through the life of the early inhabitants of the Klausen caves near Essing in the Altmühltal. On this exciting journey through time, you will learn many details about the world of hunters and gatherers in the Stone Age. Which animals once lived here? What do wolves and Neanderthals have in common? What do we know today about the art and culture, religion and burial rites of the last Ice Age? And many interesting questions are answered: Where was the oldest now-human in Bavaria found? How sharp is a flint stone and why are there no Neanderthals left today? Or are there? Join us on a fascinating visit to a bygone era when mammoth herds and cave bears roamed the banks of the Altmühl... Starting points/finishing points: Essing wooden bridge over the canal (Tatzelwurm). Good footwear is recommended & don't forget your flashlights! ATTENTION: The tour is only offered from Easter to October 1st due to bat protection!
Hike in the Lower Altmühl Valley to sacrificial sites and caves
Join us on a journey to prehistoric cult sites and caves in the Lower Altmühltal: visit the imposing rock complex of the Schellnecker Wänd with us and find out what sacrificial rituals were performed here. Find out more about an unusual burial and the camp site of Stone Age hunter-gatherers. The Klausen Caves - Step into the living room of the Neanderthals, get to know the first artists in the Altmühltal and find out what mammoth ivory and perforated sticks are all about. Explore the mighty Maifels, a sacred place for 1500 years. Join us on a hike along the Main-Danube Canal in the romantic Altmühltal valley with wonderful views of the ruins of Randeck Castle and picturesque Essing. Start/finish points: optional: Museumshof - Gronsdorf lock parking lot - Essing wooden bridge (Tatzelwurm) - or on request. Good footwear is recommended & don't forget your flashlight! ATTENTION: Due to bat protection, the tour is only offered from Easter to October 1st (altern. without the Klausenhöhlen)!
An archaeological walk on the Frauenberg above Weltenburg Abbey

The Frauenberg near Weltenburg dominates the entrance to the Danube Gorge: once a hub of international trade, a contested settlement and the stately seat of a saint - what other secrets are hidden above Bavaria's oldest monastery? And what does all this have to do with an invisible UNESCO World Heritage Site?

An archaeological discovery tour in the forest

Often quite inconspicuous, and yet hidden everywhere: relics of times long past. Along a short hiking route, we come across evidence from the Bronze and Iron Ages. There are also Roman traces to discover. Who will be the first to find the monuments? What do they still tell us today about life in times long past?

Adventure Museum

Museum education at the Kelheim Archaeological Museum

The task of museum education is to familiarize children and young people with the museum through active offers and to let them experience the joy and fun of discovering the lives of our ancestors.

History is not abstract in the museum. The large and small originals vividly tell of past realities of life, which form the basis for today. History is local in the museum: it is precisely the concrete regional references that bring the past to life and create an understanding of one's own surroundings and homeland.

With interactive, curriculum-related tours and activity-oriented workshops, schools are specifically invited to the museum as a place of learning. The program is also deliberately geared towards kindergartens and children's groups. The Children's birthday parties on the Stone Age or Romans for children aged 5 and over.

Living museum

The Archaeological Museum invites you to immerse yourself in history with guided tours and activities.

With Guided tours The archaeological exhibition in the museum or guided hikes to the archaeological sites in and around Kelheim allow adults and families to immerse themselves in the past millennia.

The extensive museum education program is aimed at children and young people under the motto "Adventure Museum" with interactive tours and workshops. There are a variety of options for schools and kindergartens, which can be individually adapted.

And little history fans can also celebrate their birthday at the Kelheim Archaeological Museum.

Workshops

The workshops are held after an introduction to the originals in the museum. They can be combined with each other and with all guided tours. Admission is of course only charged once!

Duration per workshop: 1.5 hours
Costs per workshop: Basic price 120.00 euros, plus materials if necessary + 2.00 euros admission per participant from 6 years, under 6 years free admission!

On foot

Celtic or medieval waistband shoes - a successful model that has remained almost unchanged for centuries. A leather workshop for young people and adults.

Celtic trifle
Based on original finds from the Kelheim oppidum, you can try your hand at the anvil yourself. A workshop for adults under the expert guidance of Thomas Dorsch.

Time games
The concept of time and the dimension of time is the focus of the workshop for children and young people. 

Knight and princess
Who lived where, how and why in a castle. What did a castle need and what castles were there? A creative and informative workshop for kindergarten groups.

Kelheim - City of the Wittelsbachs

What did Kelheim and the life of its inhabitants look like in the Middle Ages? What were the most important buildings and who lived and worked there? Then design your own medieval Kelheim... a workshop for school classes (from 4th grade).

Roman games

Micare digitis and much more - how did Roman children play?

Round mill - pastime of the Roman soldiers

The round mill was one of the favorite games of Roman soldiers. You can see real stones in the exhibition!

In the footsteps of Stone Age hunters and mammoths or Celtic and Roman contemporaries, the little birthday party celebrates a colorful and creative party in the museum.

While watching and discovering, playing, dressing up and doing handicrafts, the children immerse themselves in the exciting world of the past.

Duration per children's birthday party: 2 hours
Costs: 120,- Euro including material and a drink (mineral water or fruit juice spritzer); plus 2,- Euro admission per child from 6 years, under 6 years free admission! (max. 12 children)
Please clarify possible dates and the individual program with us in advance!

After the program, children are welcome to stay in the museum under supervision during regular opening hours.

Note: You are also welcome to bring cakes etc. for the children.
