On the first floor of the museum you can find out that people were already living in the Altmühltal around 200,000 years ago.
Unique finds unearthed by archaeologists in Kelheim and the surrounding area demonstrate an unbroken continuity of settlement from the Ice Age to the granting of town rights to Kelheim in the Middle Ages. The exhibition vividly presents how the Danube and Altmühl, two major lifelines, have made Kelheim—the „city on the river“—a place of encounter for millennia, from Neanderthals to the Celts, Romans, and Baiuvarians.
On the upper floor is the local history exhibition, which presents the development of Kelheim over the centuries.
Exceptional exhibits provide a vivid insight into the everyday and professional life of the ducal trading and craft town: from wine and beer production to fishermen, shipyards, and boatmen. Visitors learn why neck violins make no music and why all Kelheimer can swim. And time and again, the Wittelsbach dynasty left its mark on the city: from the residence of the first dukes to the all-surpassing royal Hall of Liberation.
