Liberation Hall Kelheim

The memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation 1813 - 1815, commissioned by King Ludwig I, was begun by Friedrich Gärtner in the style of ancient and Christian central building ideas and completed in 1863 by Leo von Klenze according to modified plans.

The buttresses of the outer façade are crowned by 18 colossal statues as allegories of the German tribes. The number 18 also symbolizes the date of the Battle of Leipzig (18.10.1813), when Napoleon's troops were crushed by the coalition.

The best way to tackle the steep climb to the Befreiungshalle is with the Ludwigsbahn. The white and blue mini train departs regularly from the Danube landing stage. Not only is it an effortless way to get up the hill and enjoy the view of the city, but you can also learn lots of interesting facts along the way.
