Historic granary
The Kelheim Archaeological Museum is located in the medieval Herzogkasten in the heart of Kelheim's old town. The building was originally constructed from the humpback ashlars of the former Kelheim Castle as a tithe storehouse for the duke's dues.
The Herzogkasten remained a warehouse until 1850. It was then acquired by the town of Kelheim as a warehouse. Since then, the Herzogkasten has served as barracks, a police school, a research institute for the German Reichspost, US Army quarters, refugee accommodation and, until 1968, a secondary school.
Before the museum was housed, the original late Gothic condition of the duke's box was restored.
An original section and a reconstruction of the fortification wall of the Celtic oppidum Alkimoennis can be seen in the museum's inner courtyard. This elaborately fortified town stretched from the old town of Kelheim at the junction of the Danube and Altmühl rivers over the Michelsberg and Hirschberg hills to the heights of Weltenburg Abbey. The walls, which are mostly still clearly recognizable today as earth ramparts, surrounded the approximately 600-hectare site and had a total length of around 10 km.
There are also replicas of two Bronze Age burial mounds and a copy of a statue of Mars, the Roman god of war, as well as contemporary sculptures.
In the inner courtyard is the first station of the Altmühltal Archaeology Park. The longest archaeological park in Europe presents almost 40 km of reconstructions and visualizations of archaeological sites along the Main-Danube Canal. Many of the original finds from the excavations along the Main-Danube Canal can be viewed in the museum.
